Wind and wave fields influence the radar reflectivity of the sea surface. Using appropriate modelling, it is possible to determine wind speed and direction and wave height distribution. The radar reflectivity is strongly affected by the presence of oil film on the water surface. Oil spill following major disasters or bad practices can be detected and monitored using SAR images.
